Magnesia is currently the only client of the magnesia image manager. It is entirely written in Java Swing and optimized for use over the internet.
Magnesia tries to load as less as possible and as much as useful. This means, images are only transferred in their full size if needed in full size. Otherwise, for viewing purposes e.g., images are transferred up to screen width. This is usually a great speed improvement and works fine als for low upstream and comparably big screens (I have no problems with my 24" screen and an upstream of ~512kBit/s).
Magnesia offers all functionality offered by chalk and encapsulates all that into a nice gui. Besides that, it works with a cache, which holds at least the 10 most recently viewed images.
